Introduction to Medical Statistics - Power and Sample Size (Part 4)

08/01/2018 13:30

Sample size calculations should be an important component of any study protocol and is required for most grant applications. It is also necessary for ethical approval since the success or failure of a study can depend on whether the appropriate number of individuals is included. Study participants (humans or animals) are put at risk (or at least inconvenienced) and if the study is undersized, medical knowledge is not being advanced, diverting resources from more worthwhile research, and having a negative impact on future research. If the sample size is too large, more people are put at risk (or inconvenienced) than necessary, and resources are overstretched. This course will explain the information required to work out sample sizes and also address the problems associated with too small or large a study.

Examples of computing sample sizes by hand will be illustrated for the comparison of two groups with both quantitative and qualitative outcomes of interest. Adjustments for drop outs will also be explained. The use of Minitab for these calculations will also be covered and participants will be able to work through lecture examples using the software. In addition, Minitab will be used to compute sample sizes for observational studies and those with more than 2 groups (ANOVA).

In order to be able to do this course, participants would have to be familiar with all the concepts covered in the Part 3 - Hypothesis Testing course.
