Salary: NHS Band 5 equivalent

Scottish Health Innovations Ltd (SHIL) works in partnership with NHS Scotland to identify, protect and develop new ideas that come from healthcare professionals. NHS Research Scotland (NRS) is a partnership involving Scottish NHS Boards and the Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of the Scottish Government, whose central management team (CMT) sits within SHIL.
The overarching aim of NRS is to ensure that NHS Scotland provides the best environment to support clinical research and it aims to increase the number of studies and the level of patient recruitment to research projects undertaken across Scotland. CMT assists in delivering this aim by providing a range of support services, including being a single point of contact to efficiently route feasibility requests across NRS, providing collated feedback to Sponsor in a rapid and reliable manner, and collecting, correlating and analysing financial data in relation to service support costs.
The Data Quality Support Officer role provides administrative support to CMT, providing day to day support to the Networks and Specialty Group Manager, Industry Liaison Manager, and the Information and Quality Manager, who are responsible for ensuring the integrity of, and reporting on, a wide variety of NRS metrics and other data, including finances, study activity and recruitment.
This role supports CMT by carrying out data quality checks and running routine reports of activity within NRS, using agreed Standard Operational Procedures (SOPS), in order that CMT can provide robust quality data to inform the work of the NRS collaboration.
This includes use of SReDA, CPMS, and the NRS Finance tool, although other systems may be used.
The post holder will also have responsibility for day to day handling and routeing of national feasibilities received by NRS from industry partners.
The postholder is expected to:
- be an advocate for improving data quality, and to contribute to the continuous development and improvement of the systems, processes and procedures used by CMT
- where appropriate, contribute towards the development of SOPS which will support standardised working practice within the organisation
- review information on NRS systems to ensure that it is accurate and fit for purpose, and provide feedback to NHS R&D staff to enable corrective action to be taken
- monitor systems to ensure that data is regularly updated by NHS R&D or other NHS staff.
Candidates should have a qualification (minimum HND) in a business/IT/computing/science related subject. Previous experience of the NHS or health related research is not essential but would be advantageous. Excellent IT skills are essential, as is the experience of working with large volumes of complex data.
The post reports to the CMT General Manager.
- Monitor the feasibilities mailbox; circulate feasibilities requests to appropriate NHS colleagues; provide collated feedback in a timely manner (1-2 hours per day)
- Run routine reports (monthly or quarterly) on commercial and non-commercial activity using CPMS, SReDA or other systems
- Support CMT staff in preparation of non-routine reports when required
- Process or perform standard analyses on extracted data, as directed
- Support Information and Quality Manager in preparation of data for the annual Research Assessment and CSO Allocation exercises
- Ensure data quality, by using the appropriate NRS SOP to review study data for accuracy and completeness
- Perform audit checks, including of NRS review time clocks, to ensure supporting documentation exists to back up study information represented in NRS systems
- Run routine data quality reports
- Notify Health Boards of data quality issues to be corrected, and issue reminders when required
- Routine user account creation and management
- Follow up and resolve data queries from NHS staff
- Provide feedback and suggestions for updating and developing routine reports and SOPs
- Any other activities as directed by the CMT General Manager.
Experience and Skills:
- Experience of working with large datasets to produce routine reports and analysis
- High standard of IT literacy
- Strong verbal and written communications skills
- Well-developed problem-solving skills
- Ability to work to deadlines
- Strong interpersonal and good team-working skills.
- Degree or HND in a relevant IT, business, or science related area is preferred
- Experience in NHS or health related research
- Knowledge of MS Excel (formulae, pivot tables and data analysis techniques)
- The experience of using SReDA or CPMS.
